Recently, I have read an article in which
the author claimed that natural sciences are not as beneficial as social
sciences in the 21st century. I strongly believe that he is right.
The 21st century is a new era. In the past centuries, the humanity
discovered many things about science. However, most of the time the scientists
have a hard time with ethical and economical issues.
During the 20th century, cloning
was found. The humanity has the power of making copies of themselves or other
species. Although the scientists seem powerful due to their discovery, the
actual power is within the social sciences. Those scientists definitely need
powerful lawyers, economists with inquiring minds and open-minded people who
are dealing with ethics and philosophy.
I have always believed in social sciences
have the power. You may ask why I am writing this and why I claim that social
sciences have much more benefits than natural sciences, do not you? However,
you might not see the critical point: If the ethical problems cannot be
overcome, then “cloning” cannot be done.
Let me show you why ethics is a daunting
area. If a clone of somebody is created, and if that clone murders someone
else, who will be accused of this circumstance? The clone or the “real” person?
Most of the people would think the “clone” will be charged for this, which is
reasonable. However, what would happen if that clone got an award, such as a
Nobel Prize? Now, you may think that the real person should get that prize, do
not you? These are all ethical problems that people should overcome. If a clone
wins a prize, people should first examine how he/she did that. Maybe the real
person had done some research about that particular topic, but the clone stole
it. No one can know who should get the prize then. In my opinion, you might
have started to think that ethics has a bigger impact on our lives.
Living on Mars is another topic. The whole
world thinks that the technological developments will save our future. However,
no one thinks about the economical issues. How will the scientists gather the
whole money? They do need money to test the rockets and spaceships that are
going to be used. If they do not have a person who is an expert about economics,
they will not be able to finance this creative idea.
Electrical cars can also be considered as a
benefit for humanity. The cars with artificial intelligence might seem a
“super” invention. However, by the time that car gets involved in a car crash
and accidentally kills a person, law will seem much more beneficial for that
person who sits in the car. In this case, who will be accused of the car crash?
The person who sits in the car, the car with the artificial intelligence or the
scientist who created the car? At first, natural sciences might seem a more
advantageous area for the humanity. However, the problems about the
technological developments can only be solved with social sciences.
I do believe that natural sciences have
benefits for humanity. However, we all need social sciences more while tying to
overcome an unpleasant and a daunting situation. Although people had done many
discoveries in the past centuries, some of them cannot be used in our daily
lives as there are issues with ethics, law and economics.
All in all, as our future depends on
solving the “social sides” of the technological developments and inventions,
nowadays social sciences are more beneficial and important that natural
sciences for the humanity.
