I have finally
arrived at New York. I am really excited to see my new “home” at Manhattan. I
have rent a quite enormous one, which is on top of a skyscraper. The view of
the balcony that I have seen in the photo is just spectacular. Therefore, I am
full of excitement to throw parties with my new friends. While I am dreaming
about the balcony of my apartment I suddenly realized some criticism of people
about this wonderful place. Although many people think that New York is too
crowded and noisy, I strongly believe that it is a city with new adventures in
it. I cannot wait to see what opportunities and chances that I will be able to
follow…
As I am going to
accomplish my internship in the Supreme Court till the end of the year, I have
chosen my apartment from a location which is not very detached to the court.
When I entered my new sweet home, the first thing I have done is to run towards
my balcony, rapidly. The peaceful cafés, colorful stores, playgrounds with
children’s laughs and the people’s -who are walking pointlessly around the
street- joy all adorn the street in front of my house. Even some trivial things
around us can affect the mood of the people and change the atmosphere of the
city.
I have settled
down to my new home in a week. Throughout this week, I have the chance to
figure out the citizens of Manhattan. Although I am an expat in this country, I
have not encountered any nuisance. The people are sincere and polite, which
makes me feel much more courageous while communicating with them. One more time,
I have learned to break my biases that racial discrimination will always
disturb the foreigner. However, these thoughts have been circulating for
several years in the whole world. Therefore, people from different countries
get detached day by day. Technically, being racist can only be explained by
obliviousness. According to my point of view, racist people are also
extremists. Those people cannot catch up with the today’s world -where global
citizenship is approved-, and they are definitely suffering from tardiness.
The next day is my
first day at the Supreme Court. As I am an inexperienced and a naive lawyer, I
have started to analyze other lawyers’ -who are generally at least have an
experience of a year or ten- attitudes and way of speaking. During my
observation, I take some notes about how to be a professional, ordered and cool
lawyer. The first thing I have figured out is “lawyers should never be timid.”
Their job is to communicate with everyone around them, and help people about
their concerns or problems. The second rule is definitely about compassion and
dedication towards their job. In order to express your feelings and show your
clients how you are compassionate about your job, you have to be sincere,
well-mannered and brave. Thus, I should be able to speak out loud stoutly
during the cross examinations. The third rule is to use a complicated,
sophisticated and advanced language in daily life. No slang words or jargon is
accepted in the world of advocacy. The last but not the least, unless you believe
in yourself, you will never be able to get advanced in your area. After taking
my notes, I still brood about these tips which will lead me forward in my
career.
Throughout this
year, I will try to do my best and improve my skills -which are applied by
experienced lawyers- and build up some nice relationships -which do not include
xenophobia and racists thoughts-. I have always believed that new opportunities
start new adventures, and those adventures expand your perspective. Now it is
high time to enjoy my fresh life in New York, Manhattan…
