Is trying to be a “perfectionist” a good
thing or a bad thing? Probably most of the people would say "of course
it's a good thing" in response to this question. However, I do not think it
is exactly a good thing.
The reason is very simple: A person who is
a “perfectionist”, never thinks that he/she is perfect. He/She always finds a
flaw or sets a higher goal for himself/herself. Setting high goals for
ourselves is, of course, a pleasant thing. It always takes us further than
where we are at that moment. But this situation can also prevent us from living
life.
However, is it really possible to be a
“perfect person”? In my opinion, this is hardly possible. While trying to be a
perfect person first, you always think about being perfect subconsciously. If
you're obsessed with something like that, you will not be "perfect". This
might be an indication that you do not have the “perfect” self-esteem.
Let's consider that you have a perfect
self-confidence. Then, this time you may not be able to live your life while
trying to reach that goal. Or, that thought may distract you frequently. Therefore,
you cannot be "totally" perfect in any way.
Also, what is the limit of being
"perfect", is there a limit? For such a subjective thought, each of
us can say unlimited goals. How can we be perfect, under these circumstances?
For example, speaking six languages in a highly advanced way, graduating from
several universities at the same time, doing sports every day to improve
ourselves and reading a book, winning Nobel prizes, having lots of friends,
being known around the world? Or is being “perfect” means make time for
ourselves every day, just for our mental health?
Maybe it is not enough to achieve “just one”
of these examples, if you want to be "perfect". Additionally, there
are thousands of other criterions for “being successful”. A person cannot know
everything in the world in a detailed way. One also cannot do each task
perfectly. This aim is the same as this:
Little girls want to be a fairy, a princess, a mermaid and a ballerina at the
same time…
Sometimes we cannot reach our objectives
each day due to the intensity of our to-do-list. We prioritise the task we most
want to do among the other tasks-which means we cannot complete each task we
have written into our to-do-list. As a result, we cannot be perfect “thanks to
(!)” our limited time.
Another requirement for being a perfect
person is being flawless… Even if you are dealing with a task for the first
time in your life, you should not make any mistakes. Since this is an
impossible request, everyone can consider -once again- that “being perfect” is
impossible. After all, none of us are robots, and even robots can make mistakes
due to coding errors or a thousand reasons I do not know yet.
However, these things should not prevent
you from trying to be "perfect". Although we may not be “perfect”, we
can be “almost-perfect” people. We can all become “almost perfect” individuals
by working hard and living a fun life.
We should never say “I can't be perfect
anyway” and give up on the high goals we set for ourselves. We must continue to
work as if we could be perfect. In that case, you will be more successful than
everyone around you, and everyone will consider that you are
"perfect".
Long story short, although it is impossible
for a "perfectionist" person to reach their "perfect
goals", none of us should give up on those goals. While living our lives,
we also should work-hard in order to achieve those goals. There will definitely
be people around you who congratulate and appreciate you for your success and
determination.
