A TERRIBLE VOLCANIC ERUPTION IN SPAIN

Our poor World suffers several natural disasters. These disasters not only affect the environment but also the humanity. Societies try to fight against these horrible problems with their technological opportunities. However, they may not prevent each disaster before it occurs.

There are many different types of natural disasters such as earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanic eruptions, avalanches, landslides, droughts and floods. They all have different influences on the societies. While some of the natural disasters cause deaths, some of them may only affect the people economically.

One of the most recent natural disaster is the volcanic eruption which occurred in Spain. This volcanic eruption began on 19 September 2021 at the island of La Palma. This volcanic eruption still continues today -on 13 November 2021-. Although the lava has reached the Atlantic Ocean after ten days it started, the eruption has not stopped yet. By the time lava have reached the Atlantic Ocean, the release of toxic gases has increased.

The eruption in Palma is the first disaster since 1971. The main cause of the volcanic eruption was the big earthquakes which occurred before this frightening disaster. Dozens of earthquakes have been occurred since the beginning of the disaster. Unfortunately, the earthquakes still continue at the very moment. Both the earthquakes and the volcanic eruption leads to a huge panic and chaos among the people in Spain.

The lava is about 1000 Celsius degrees, which creates an enormous danger for the citizens. As the speed flow of the lava is really fast, almost 1000 hectares have been covered with lava. Everyone has panicked and shocked due to this terrifying event. In total, 80 million cubic meters of lava have destroyed lots of people’s lives. About 3000 buildings have been destroyed. Nearly 7000 people have been evacuated as the volcanic eruption gives dreadful harm to everywhere. Therefore, many people have lost their jobs and sweet homes as well. Technically, they left their special memories behind…

This volcanic eruption has also affected the country economically. Not only the citizens but also some tourists have been affected badly due to this unpleasant circumstance, which influence the tourism sector and economy too. Due to the polluted air, a lot of flights have been cancelled. Many hectares of agricultural lands have been damaged, which leads to another serious impact in economics. According to the premier of the Canary Islands, more than 200 million euros have been lost because of the harm occurred.

In conclusion, the terrifying earthquakes have led to a dreadful volcanic eruption. The eruption influenced the society both spiritually and economically. As the eruption still continues, the panic among the people increases day by day. I hope that this natural disaster finishes as soon as possible…

ENVIRONMENTAL SYSTEMS AND SOCIETIES: INTERNAL ASSESSMENT (IB)

HOW DOES THE COUNTRIES’ -TURKEY, THE NETHERLANDS AND THE USA- SOLAR POWER USAGE CORRELATE WITH THEIR ECONOMIC STATUS? PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT Solar energy can be used for solar water heaters and house heating. The heat from solar energy enables the production of food, chemicals, textiles, and it can also be used in warm greenhouses, swimming pools, and livestock buildings. Furthermore, providing a power source for electronic devices and even cooking can be achieved by using solar energy [1] . Turkey is a country which might use the solar power energy efficiently. However, in our country, although the solar energy is used sporadically for hot water in domestic use and in some hotels in southern Turkey, we can state that it is not widely applied as a sustainable and a clean energy source. Unlike Turkey, the Netherlands uses the technological opportunities really well, even though the country does not have an extreme access of sun light [2] . On the contrary, United States ...

ELECTRIC CONSUMPTION AND ENERGY SAVING

[7] INTRODUCTION: THE EFFECTS OF ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT Electricity has a great importance in our World nowadays. Especially, due to the pandemic we all have started using the electrical devices and gadgets much more than before. This increase in electricity consumption has absolutely some effects on the environment. These impacts depend on the usage, how and where we have been generating or delivering. The usage of electricity may seem quite safe. However, the production and transmission of electricity have a huge impact on the environment. Electricity is generated by moving a conductive wire such as copper in a magnetic field. An electric generator is a machine that contains coiled conductive wires rotating inside a magnet and generates electric current by rotating these wires. In order to obtain a large amount of electrical energy which is necessary in our homes, workplaces, industry; large power plants are needed. [8]   Most power plants are gen...

ENGLISH INDIVIDUAL ORAL QUESTIONS (IB)

What ideas and images do we associate with a healthy lifestyle? In my opinion the main point is balancing our lives. Most of the people think that a healthy lifestyle includes only eating vegetables and fruits, doing tons of cardio and not even tasting the meals that include carbohydrates. This idea is wrong. Because a lifestyle should be able to last forever. We should also include some awards like chocolate or pasta in our diet. What constitutes an identity? The society plays the biggest role while creating our identities. Because our values and culture affect our way of thinking and our lifestyle as well. Our family and our friends may change our point of view. For instance, when we visit our family members who live abroad may develop our personality. While talking with them we might use another language. And the language we use improves our vision. When we start talking another language, we might think in a different way than usual. The vocabulary and the gramm...
