WRITING A NEW ENDING FOR A PLAY OR A LITERARY WORK: MATILDA

 PREFACE

I like reading books like Matilda does. I really love Roald Dahl’s books, especially Matilda. He uses the language quite understandably in his books. There are not too many highly advanced words, so while reading them one can comprehend the plot easily. I admire his language. In this project I tried to write as he does.

In my bookshelf I have got almost every book which Roald Dahl has written. I read all the books a million times from him in English. In my opinion that’s why I was able to write this story really quickly and easily. I hope you will like the new ending for the story of Matilda.

While I was doing this project, I had the chance to repeat the topics which we have been learning in literature classes. For this topic, I thank for all the English teachers, and especially my lovely teacher İrem Gökalp.

As I said in the new ending of this book, teaching is the most important job in the entire world.

INTRODUCTION

Matilda is my favorite book. I have read this book both in Turkish and in English many times. I admire Matilda very much because she is clever, cultured and self-confident. When she is five years old, she goes to the secondary school. I wish I had the same ability.

Matilda is a very smart girl. Unlike her family, she loves reading books and learning things. She has an illiterate family. They always watch television, and they hate reading. His father cheats at his job i
n order to earn more money. When she starts the primary school, she meets a kind teacher, Miss Honey, who helps her very much. Unfortunately, she also meets a dangerous and terrible head mistress, Miss Trunchbull. Matilda learns that Miss Honey and Miss Trunchbull have a relationship and other bad stories. Then Matilda helps her teacher to gain the house back from Miss Truncbull. At the end of the story, Matilda’s family flee to Spain because of her father’s cheating at his job. Matilda stays with Miss Honey and they have a great life.

What would happen if they had not fled to Spain? What would happen if Matilda had educated her family with new techniques?

 PRE-WRITING

My story is going to be about “if Matilda and her family had not fled to Spain.”

The Characters Which Are Going To Be In the New Ending

  • Matilda will go to her same school, but with elder children who are twelfth grade.
  •  Mr. Wormwood will carry on his job. (His job is selling cars that are used before.)
  • Mrs. Wormwood will continue her life as a housewife until Matilda teaches her how to write literal books.
  • Michael will continue to his same school
  •  Ms. Honey will continue to her job as the new head mistress.
  •   As Matilda and Ms. Honey got rid of from Ms. Trunchbull by using Matilda’s supernatural powers, Ms. Truncbull will not be included in this new ending.
  •   Lavender will also continue to her same school.

The Story

One day, Matilda finds out that her family members become genius people like herself after she teaches them. Her brother will be able to do complicated scientific experiments. Her mother will be able to write literal books very quickly and flawlessly. His father will be able to solve complex problems in mathematics. She knows that her family is both illiterate and stupid, so at first she cannot understand how they become cleverer.

She goes to Ms. Honey’s house and tells her about the situation. Then they figure out that this can be because of her teaching techniques. If this cleverness occurs by the techniques she used while teaching, it might be useful for students as well.

New techniques which are going to be used in teaching:

1-      Finding out the students’ skills. It can be at any field: English, mathematics, sports, music, arts, etc.

2-      Avoiding competition among students.

3-      Teaching students how to be creative.

4-      Instead of giving punishments to students, rewarding the ones with good performance.

5-      Teaching how to think and see the further steps.

6-      The less homework the teachers give, the best opportunity the students will have in order to improve themselves.

Matilda will start to work as a teacher in her school. She will teach children with her new teaching techniques. After a while she will see that every student has a specific talent. For instance, her best friend Lavender will be able to play the piano very well. A boy will be able to run very fast. Another girl will be able to both write and read poems perfectly. Another boy will be able to speak, write and listen seven different languages in a month and in a highly advanced way. Some of the students will be able to do several things at the same time which are going to be taught for being teachers in the future. Ms. Honey’s school will be the best school in the village.

THE NEW ENDING FOR “MATILDA”

 ___________________________________________________________________________

Ms. Honey become the new head mistress, after Ms. Truncbull has gone. As Ms. Honey promised Matilda to transfer her to the twelfth grade, Matilda starts to go to the school with elder students. Matilda’s brother Michael and her best friend Lavender also continue to the same school and with students which are at their age. Mr. Wormwood carries on his old job which is selling cars that are used before. For now, Mrs. Wormwood continues her life as housewife.

One day, Matilda and her father were talking about her father’s financial issues in his job. While they were discussing, Matilda told her father about solving complex mathematic problems easily. Interestingly, Mr. Wormwood listened to her, and believed in her. After a while he was able to solve difficult problems in seconds. Matilda was impressed.

A few weeks later, his brother Michael asked Matilda some questions about science. While they were talking, Michael decided to do an experiment about growing plants in a place without atmosphere and air, which is an absolutely complicated scientific experiment. Again, Matilda was shocked.

A few days later, Matilda saw that her mother was reading Macbeth from Shakespeare and there were books on the coffee table, such as: A Tale of Two Cities from Charles Dickens -who is Matilda’s favorite writer-, and the book For Whom the Bells Tolls from Ernest Hemingway. At first Matilda surprised, but then she taught that his father was changed, and this was an effect on her family.

She sat next to her mother, and asked: “Do you really love reading books?

Of course, I love reading lately” she replied. “As you know, I didn’t use to read books. I used to hate them, but now it is a passion for me.

Why don’t you write books?” Matilda asked. “It would be perfect if you wrote novels like these…” Matilda said, showing the books which are on the coffee table. “I can also recommend you some other novels, as well.

Mrs. Wormwood suddenly stood up and said: “You are right my dear. I can write spectacular novels as you said. I must…” Her mother went to bring her laptop and started to write quickly and flawlessly.

Matilda ran to Ms. Honey’s new house. She was very excited to told Ms. Honey about this interesting situation.

Ms. Honey opened the door and smiled at her. She said: “Please, do come in.

Matilda started to talk quickly and merrily: “Ms. Honey, a few weeks before I taught my father how to solve complex mathematic problems. Now, he can solve them easily like I do. After a while my lazy brother asked me some questions about science and after I gave him a little lecture on science, he started to do complicated scientific experiments. After then, I saw that my mom while was reading classics. As you know, she used to hate books. I talked to her and convinced her to write novels. She began to write novels in a flawless way.

While Matilda was telling about the situation, Ms. Honey was listening to her really carefully.

She asked Matilda: “This is very interesting. What is the common point? How did they turn into very different people?

Matilda thought for a while. Then she realized something: “It all started after I taught my father. It might be because of my teaching techniques.

That’s true. I know how illiterate your family is.” said Ms. Honey. “You must have got amazing teaching techniques.

If my family can turn into a family like this, than everyone can be taught with new teaching techniques and everyone can have their special skills in any branch. If this cleverness occurs by the techniques I used while teaching, it might be useful for students as well!” Matilda shouted happily.

You are amazing! Let’s discuss about the new teaching techniques.” said Ms. Honey.

First of all, one has to find out the students’ skills. This skill can be at any field: English, mathematics, sports, music, arts, etc.

Secondly, if teachers don’t make a competition among students, then students can concentrate on their work easily. By this, students will work freely without stress and they will be more successful.

Thirdly, teachers must teach the students how to be creative. If people continue to copy things, then there will be no innovation and development. Also prioritizing memorizing is a bad thing. Most of the students can memorize the topics just before the exams. Instead of memorizing the details, we can teach children how to make research. For instance they can search the same thing in different languages. We can also teach which sources are reliable. Another thing which we can teach is thinking, improving and interpretation about this topic. Then they will be able to use the information, which is more efficient that memorizing and forgetting the details.

The most important thing is to teach how to think and see and consider the further steps. One can see same idea in chess. If we want to improve ourselves efficiently and quickly, then we must be both creative and think about the further events. By looking at the further events, one can see that the events’ consequences and prevent or solve the problems where necessary.

Another important thing is, instead of punishing the students, to reward them without a competition among children. Students will be motivated by this way.

In conclusion the less homework the teachers give, the best opportunity the students will have in order to improve themselves. After school, instead of doing homework, children can develop themselves in their leisure time.” said Matilda.

Why don’t we try this? On Monday, you can start teaching your old class. You know each other very well, so you won’t be stressed and excited too much. I can also come with you. It will be educational. If these techniques work –I think that they will definitely work-, after a while you can start to teach the teachers. In the end, the entire school will be taught these new techniques and everybody will be very successful. Maybe you will be a really famous professor about this topic, and you might teach people in famous universities.” said Ms. Honey.

That would be great Ms. Honey. Thanks for everything.” said Matilda happily.

On Monday, Matilda started to teach the class. One could see that every kid was very excited, and thinking about what was Matilda going to talk about. Matilda began to chat with her friends. At first you might think that she does not teach anything, but actually she was trying to understand everybody’s skills and talents. She saw that every student had a specific talent. Somehow she figured out her classmates specific talents.

The next day, she taught her friends about their talents.

Nigel, you’re talent is learning languages easily. When you go home, watch movies in different languages. You can watch the same movie first in English, so you can understand what’s going on. After that, change the language and open the English subtitles. You will be able to speak, write and listen many different languages in a month and in a highly advanced way.” said Matilda.

Alice, I want you to read and analyze poems. You can bring me them whenever you want. The more you read, the more quickly and easier you analyze. You will be able to write, analyze and read loudly poems perfectly in weeks.

Let’s go to the garden.” said Matilda.

When they went to garden, everybody was waiting excitedly for what she will do here.

Eric.” said Matilda. “Can you run from here to the door, please?

Eric didn’t understand why she wanted such a thing, but without thinking he started to run. Matilda looked at her watch. The distance, which he was running, was approximately three hundred meters. He finished in forty seconds, which is really fast.

Matilda started to talk: “You are able to run very fast. If you work hard, you can be a champion in the future.

Tommy,” she continued. “Can you throw a basket from here?” Between Tommy and the backboard. He threw a basket easily. “Can you do it from a place which is a little bit further?” asked Matilda. He again threw it. “You can work on basketball Tommy. Now, let’s go to the music room.” said Matilda.

When they went to the music room, Lavender was waiting very excitedly. She was thinking about her turn. At that moment, Matilda asked Lavender to play the piano.

But I don’t know how to play!” Lavender cried.

I know. Try it. You can figure out how to play the piano in a few minutes.” Matilda said.

Lavender start to press on some notes. In a few minutes she really figured out how to play. Now, she was pressing on the notes which were melodic. Matilda gave her a piece of paper which has notes on it. It was the notes of the famous Für Elise from Beethoven.

You will be able to play this piece in a few days Lavender.” said Matilda. Lavender was shocked, but she believed in Matilda. She was her best friend first of all.

Tommy, you also have a talent for playing the guitar. Try this piece at home.” said Matilda.

How can he have two skills at the same time?” cried Nigel.

Actually, he has three skills at the same time Nigel. He can also learn languages easily like you. Amanda also has two skills. She can both write detective stories perfectly and teach any subject she wants easily.

Some people can be talented in several branches, but you can also succeed in several fields without an extraordinary talent if you work really hard. The only difference is they will be able to do them easily. If you work hard, you can achieve anything you want, Nigel.

The students who are capable of doing several things at the same time, are going to be teachers in the future. The best students should become teachers because educating people is the most important job in the world.” explained Matilda.

Ms. Honey was impressed one more time. The first one was when she first met Matilda, and the second one was now.

As Ms. Honey said, Matilda started to teach the teachers in that school about the techniques. In the end, the entire school was taught with these new techniques and everybody became very successful, especially Matilda. She improved her techniques every day. Now, Matilda is a really famous professor, and she teaches people about this topic in famous universities all over the world.

THE END

CONCLUSION

What should we do to improve the education system? In order to develop our education system we should have some new teaching techniques such as; finding out the students’ skills, avoiding competition among students, teaching students how to be creative, instead of punishing the students rewarding the ones with good performance, teaching how to think and see the further steps and giving students the chance to have leisure time which they can use to improve themselves.

First of all, one has to find out the students’ skills in any field.

Last of all, the less homework the teachers give, the best opportunity the students will have in order to improve themselves. After school, instead of doing homework, children can develop themselves in their leisure time.

All in all, the most important job in the entire world is teaching. Teachers teach the children who are going to change the future. That’s why they have lots of responsibilities. A well-planned education is the key to success.

HOW DOES THE COUNTRIES’ -TURKEY, THE NETHERLANDS AND THE USA- SOLAR POWER USAGE CORRELATE WITH THEIR ECONOMIC STATUS? PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT Solar energy can be used for solar water heaters and house heating. The heat from solar energy enables the production of food, chemicals, textiles, and it can also be used in warm greenhouses, swimming pools, and livestock buildings. Furthermore, providing a power source for electronic devices and even cooking can be achieved by using solar energy [1] . Turkey is a country which might use the solar power energy efficiently. However, in our country, although the solar energy is used sporadically for hot water in domestic use and in some hotels in southern Turkey, we can state that it is not widely applied as a sustainable and a clean energy source. Unlike Turkey, the Netherlands uses the technological opportunities really well, even though the country does not have an extreme access of sun light [2] . On the contrary, United States ...

ELECTRIC CONSUMPTION AND ENERGY SAVING

[7] INTRODUCTION: THE EFFECTS OF ELECTRICITY CONSUMPTION ON THE ENVIRONMENT Electricity has a great importance in our World nowadays. Especially, due to the pandemic we all have started using the electrical devices and gadgets much more than before. This increase in electricity consumption has absolutely some effects on the environment. These impacts depend on the usage, how and where we have been generating or delivering. The usage of electricity may seem quite safe. However, the production and transmission of electricity have a huge impact on the environment. Electricity is generated by moving a conductive wire such as copper in a magnetic field. An electric generator is a machine that contains coiled conductive wires rotating inside a magnet and generates electric current by rotating these wires. In order to obtain a large amount of electrical energy which is necessary in our homes, workplaces, industry; large power plants are needed. [8]   Most power plants are gen...

What ideas and images do we associate with a healthy lifestyle? In my opinion the main point is balancing our lives. Most of the people think that a healthy lifestyle includes only eating vegetables and fruits, doing tons of cardio and not even tasting the meals that include carbohydrates. This idea is wrong. Because a lifestyle should be able to last forever. We should also include some awards like chocolate or pasta in our diet. What constitutes an identity? The society plays the biggest role while creating our identities. Because our values and culture affect our way of thinking and our lifestyle as well. Our family and our friends may change our point of view. For instance, when we visit our family members who live abroad may develop our personality. While talking with them we might use another language. And the language we use improves our vision. When we start talking another language, we might think in a different way than usual. The vocabulary and the gramm...
