IMPLEMENTING A CHARACTER IN ONE STORY TO ANOTHER “MATILDA AND THE SEVEN DWARFS”

PREFACE

I really enjoy our English lessons, especially while analyzing lovely and entertaining texts or writing magnificent pieces. Nowadays we are studying “how to write a descriptive essay” which I like very much. While describing things I loved using personifications, similies and metaphors that makes the piece much more attractive. I would like to use the information in this project while describing the circumstances, the characters and the setting in my “implemented story”.

While writing an “almost-new” story, I love using some characters or plots that are well-known and enjoyable. By using those well-known things, the story becomes much more interesting than ever! I am looking forward to write my own “implemented” story.

Suzan R. Hofstede, 2021

INTRODUCTION

I love literature, reading, writing and analyzing. Therefore, I love our literature lessons. While analyzing texts or writing some essays I absolutely have so much fun.

In this project, my aim is to learn and do some practice about reading, writing and analyzing the stories and the characters. While doing this project I hope I will learn some new highly advanced vocabulary, how to rewrite a story by implementing a new character and ejecting the old one. In this project I will mainly analyze the character that I am going to implement the story, analyze the character that I am going to eject from the story, write the original story that is going to change and finally write my own story, in which I will implement my favorite character.

I like reading books like Matilda does. Matilda is my favorite book. I have read this book both in Turkish and in English many times. I admire Matilda very much as she is clever, cultured and self-confident. I wish I had the same abilities as she has got.

I really love Roald Dahl’s books, especially Matilda. He uses the language quite understandably in his books. There are not too many highly advanced words, so while reading them one can comprehend the plot easily. I admire his language. In this project I tried to write as he does. In my bookshelf I have got almost every book which Roald Dahl has written. I read all his books a million times in English.

I have chosen the story “Snow White and The Seven Dwarfs” because I like changing stories that is known by everyone. In my story, I will converge the character “Snow White” with “Matilda” as they have totally conflicting characters. The story will change when someone who is independent, clever and self-confident replaces a character who is desperate, definitely does not have any confidence and always depends on a third party.

SUMMARY

In fiction stories, the characters’ traits are very important. Their role in the story, their personal characteristics and their behaviours. Most of the time, characters act according to their past experiences. In addition, the conflicts between the characters may emphasize their traits.

Matilda Wormwood is the main protagonist in the story. She is absolutely a very smart little girl.  She loves reading and learning new things. She was able to read when she was three years old.  She could read highly advanced books when she was four years old. She can solve complex problems in mathematics by heart in a few seconds. Her cleverness will affect the story, which I am going to write, in a good way.

While Matilda has a very strong personality, Snow White cannot deal with her vicious stepmother. She also cannot deal with the huntsman. If the huntsman was not that kind to her at the very moment, she had no idea what to do.  From these circumstances, we can all understand that Snow White is not clever, innovative, self-confident and bold. She cannot think properly when she is alone and she has not got an “independent” character. The reader can understand that Snow White has exactly the opposite characteristics with Matilda.

Matilda is humble, kind and as she is the protagonist of the story she is innocent. Similarly, Snow White is also kind, cute, sympathic, humble and again as she is the protagonist of her story she is innocent. These similarities will probably not make a huge change in the new story.

HOW TO ANALYZE A CHARACTER IN A FICTION STORY

While analyzing a character in a fiction story, one should first consider whether the character is a protagonist or an antagonist. Protagonists are generally the main character in that story. For instance, both Matilda and Snow White are the protagonists of their own stories. The antagonist is the person/people who has opposite thoughts, actions, reactions and behaviour of the protagonist. Generally, they are evil, harmful and vicious. However, these things can differ depending on the point of view.

The role of the character is also important. The main/major roles are described better in a detailed way in the stories, while the minor ones are not. Main characters are more complex and essential, such as the protagonists and the antagonists. Generally, the minor characters are not really important. Furthermore, their characteristics and traits do not change. They only affect a small part of the story. However, their small impacts can affect the whole course of the storyline.

The characters’ traits are also very important. Their role in the story, their personal characteristics and their behaviours. Most of the time, characters act according to their past experiences. In addition, the conflicts between the characters may emphasize their traits.

Besides, there are some flat and round characters. A flat character’s characteristics does not change through the story. Both a main and a minor character can be flat. A round character’s characteristics and traits can change or develop during the story.

In conclusion, there are many features that should be considered, while analyzing a character in a fiction story.

THE CHARACTER THAT WILL BE IMPLEMENTED: MATILDA

Matilda Wormwood is the main protagonist in the story. She is absolutely a very smart little girl.  She loves reading and learning new things. She was able to read when she was three years old.  She could read highly advanced books when she was four years old. She can solve complex problems in mathematics without writing in a few seconds. Her cleverness will affect the story, which I am going to write, in a good way.

She is clever, innovative, cultured and self-confident. Her “self-confidence” is absolutely the most important thing in that book. She has a bold character. Due to her independent, self-confident, cultured and bold personality, she can achieve whatever she wants. She is able to fight against to the antagonists.

She has extraordinary powers. When she focuses on any item, she can move it with the energy that comes from her eyes, without touching the item. Her extraordinary powers will combine with her intelligence. By using this kind of power, she will be able to deal with the antagonists.

She is kind, humble and innocent. With her kindness she will impress some characters in the story that I am going to write.

SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THE CHARACTERS: SNOW WHITE AND MATILDA

While Matilda has a very strong personality, Snow White cannot deal with her vicious stepmother. She also cannot deal with the huntsman. If the huntsman was not that kind to her at the very moment, she had no idea what to do.  From these circumstances, we can all understand that Snow White is not clever, innovative, self-confident and bold. She cannot think properly when she is alone and she has not got an “independent” character. The reader can understand that Snow White has exactly the opposite characteristics with Matilda.

Nobody has the ability that Matilda has. The most extraordinary power: moving objects without touching, only with the energy that comes from her eyes. This situation will absolutely make a big difference in the plot of the story.

From the begining, I analyzed the differences between these two cute characters. But they also have so much in common. First of all, Matilda is humble, kind and as she is the protagonist of the story she is innocent. Similarly, Snow White is also kind, cute, sympathic, humble and again as she is the protagonist of her story she is innocent. These similarities will probably not make a huge change in the new story.

All in all, Matilda and Snow White have both similarities and differences.

THE ORIGINAL STORY: SNOW WHITE AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

Snow White is a beautiful princess, whose mother has died. She lives with her evil and vicious stepmother who is the Queen. The Queen treats her very badly as she is jealous of Snow White. The Queen wants to be known as “the fairest in the land”. Each day she asks her enchanted mirror that if she is the most beautiful person in the World.

Unfortunately, Snow White has a spectacular beauty which surpasses the Queen’s beauty. Therefore, the Queen orders her huntsman to kill Snow White in the forest. The huntsman cannot kill Snow White because of her beauty and innocence. He tells her to run into the forest and to never return to the castle. He brings a heart of a wild animal to the Queen. The animals in the forest help Snow White and they take her to the small cottage where the seven dwarfs live. The dwarfs love her so much when they meet each other.

After a while, the Queen learns that Snow White lives in a cottage in the forest for several years. She makes a plan to kill Snow White herself. One day, after the dwarfs leaves the cottage to work in their diamond mine, the Queen comes to the cottage. She disguises as an old peddler and tries to convince Snow White to take a bite of the poisoned apple. Snow White falls asleep for such a long time. Although the seven dwarfs try to awake her, they cannot do anything. The Queen thinks that, she has finally triumphed.

The seven dwarfs put Snow White into a glass coffin and start to cry. Suddenly the prince arrives and learns about what they have experienced. The prince falls in love when he sees her. He kisses her and Snow White wakes up due to that magical kiss. The Queen understands that she is defeated. The prince proposes Snow White to marry him. They marry and live happily ever after.

MATILDA AND THE SEVEN DWARFS

Once upon a time there was a beautiful, smart, little girl whose name was Matilda. Matilda was a confident, intelligent girl who loved reading books. She was able to read classics and novels since she was five years old. She had supernatural powers. She could move with a power which comes from her eyes, any object without touching it.

Her mother died when she was very young. His father wanted to marry a gorgeous woman, as he really felt lonely. He married with a pretty but horrible woman. Matilda’s stepmother wanted to be the most beautiful woman in the world. Each day, the vicious stepmother asked her enchanted mirror whether she was the prettiest woman in the world or not.

The stepmother was jealous of Matilda’s beauty and intelligence. As she did not like Matilda, she hired a huntsman to kill Matilda. The huntsman was going to kill Matilda in the forest. Although Matilda was only eight years old, she was clever enough to impress the huntsman with her intelligence, her confidence and general culture. She made a plan to get rid of the huntsman. While she was running in the forest, she saw a deep hole. She covered the surface of the cavity with leaves. She decoyed the huntsman. He had to work hard to get out of that cavity. As soon as she trapped the huntsman, Matilda ran more faster than ever. As the huntsman was afraid of the vicious stepmother, he brought a heart of an animal. Therefore, the evil stepmother was now delighted and tranquil. If he did not lie at the very moment, she would instantly kill him.

At that moment, Matilda thought that she could not turn back to the house where her wicked stepmother lived. She started to walk through the forest and saw a little, cute cottage. She entered in the cottage and started looking around. After a several hours, seven dwarfs came back to their own house.

At first, both the dwarfs and Matilda were scared from each other. Then Matilda told them about her life, her evil-minded stepmother. The seven dwarfs felt bad about her story and told her that she could live with them. The dwarfs told her about themselves and about their diamond mine.

A few days later, Matilda thought that she could help them about their diamond mine. She would construct a mechanism which will do the seven dwarfs’ job.

Matilda wanted to make a surprise about “The Mining Machine” and started to work. She was building that machine really quickly, due to her intelligence and supernatural powers. A couple weeks later, she finished the machine. One day she showed the machine to the seven dwarfs. The dwarfs were very merry and thankful. As there was a machine which does the whole work, the seven dwarfs were not going working.

Ten years later, the stepmother learnt that there was a beautiful girl in that cute cottage from her enchanted mirror. She realized that Matilda was living there for years. As Matilda was much more beautiful and cleverer than before, the stepmother really got angry. She wanted to destroy Matilda.

She disguised as an innocent old woman who needed help. The vicious stepmother appeared suddenly in front of the cottage. She gave poisonous apples to Matilda. Matilda was a cultured and intelligent girl. She realized that the old woman was talking and thinking as her stepmother, viciously. Therefore, she understood that old woman was her stepmother who was going to poison her.

Matilda made an apple tart from the poisonous apples in only five minutes. As she had supernatural powers, she was able to make a cake in a couple of minutes. Matilda offered the vicious stepmother -the old lady- some apple tart. The stepmother thought that Matilda could not be able to make a cake from her poisonous apples in such a short time. She ate the cake and got poisoned . Matilda and the seven dwarfs did not have to deal with the maleficent stepmother anymore.

A few days later, Matilda went for a walk in the forest. She was a beautiful young lady. She was wearing a rose-colored dress. Her long wavy hair was dancing with the melody of the wind. She suddenly encountered with the handsome, educated prince. They started to have a chat. The more they talked, the more the prince fell in love with the Matilda. The prince was impressed by her beauty and intelligence.

He wanted to marry her as soon as possible. At that very moment, he proposed her to marry him. At first, Matilda was shocked. However, she also loved him very much. Therefore, she accepted his proposal and they had a magnificent wedding. Matilda wore a beautiful, white, wedding gown which had got laces.

They lived a really merry, peaceful, spectacular and lovely life. Matilda, her prince and the seven dwarfs lived happily ever after.

THE END

CONCLUSION

Have you ever thought about the difference between our lives? Compare yourself with your acquaintances, friends or family members for a moment. Although we are under similar circumstances, we all live completely different lives, do not we? Our lives are a result of our thoughts, feelings, actions, reactions and personality.

Our character and personality make our lives different from each other’s. Even we are under the same conditions and have the same abilities, our thoughts and actions can affect the events. Actually, our personality is related to the question “who am really I?”. Our personality is affected by our background, experiences, beliefs and thoughts. These elements create us and make everybody different from each other.

If we stay calm, be realistic and think logically when we encounter a terrible incident, we are more likely to be successful at the end. In the new story; Matilda’s behaviours, thoughts, feelings, personality, actions and reactions have changed the whole story.

I chose these two specific stories and these particular characters because Snow White and Matilda have completely opposite characters. Snow White does not think about her actions’ outcomes before she does something. On the contrary Matilda always thinks logically, realistically and she uses her intelligence before she takes action against a hard condition. Therefore, even if they go through the same events, their reactions will totally be different which will have a direct effect on the result of the story. That is the reason that I have implemented Matilda in Snow White’s well-known story.

In conclusion, no one should forget that we choose our destiny with our actions.

APPLICATIONS OF PERMUTATION, COMBINATION AND BINOMIAL EXPANSION IN DAILY LIFE

PREFACE Mathematics is a passion for me. Since I was a kid, I have always loved doing some calculations. While I am getting older day by day, my passion becomes much more than before. I hope that my passion will keep increasing. As I have started high school the topics that we learn in mathematics lessons are getting harder. Although the topics are harder than before, they become much more interesting. Therefore, I wanted to do a research about the applications of permutation, combination and binomial expansion in daily life. While doing the research, I have learned lots of new things about permutation and combination. I understood that there are lots of interesting examples about this topic. Actually, we always select and arrange some simple things, but we do not know that this concerns permutation and combination. By doing this project, I have recognized that mathematics is our life.   HOW DOES THE COUNTRIES’ -TURKEY, THE NETHERLANDS AND THE USA- SOLAR POWER USAGE CORRELATE WITH THEIR ECONOMIC STATUS? PERSONAL ENGAGEMENT Solar energy can be used for solar water heaters and house heating. The heat from solar energy enables the production of food, chemicals, textiles, and it can also be used in warm greenhouses, swimming pools, and livestock buildings. Furthermore, providing a power source for electronic devices and even cooking can be achieved by using solar energy [1] . Turkey is a country which might use the solar power energy efficiently. However, in our country, although the solar energy is used sporadically for hot water in domestic use and in some hotels in southern Turkey, we can state that it is not widely applied as a sustainable and a clean energy source. Unlike Turkey, the Netherlands uses the technological opportunities really well, even though the country does not have an extreme access of sun light [2] . On the contrary, United States ...
